Boxes
You are packing your precious items and want them to make the trip in the same way you put them in the box. Investing in strong sturdy boxes is essential for moving, pick 2 size strong sturdy boxes one for china and fragile items and another for bedding towels clothes etc. (Crisp and supermarket boxes) are not advised as they will crush in the moving vehicle, just think those boxes are designed to transport light products not your precious possessions.
Tape
Investing in quality tape again is essential, we see a lot of self-packs who use duct tape as it’s a cheaper option and can be bought from most shop, often it does not end well the tape starts to peel off the bottom of the box and those items that you took the time to wrap carefullycan end up on the floor because the tape was not strong enough to hold the box together.

Overnight essentials
On the night before the move, tuck everyday essentials—a change of clothes, a toothbrush, must-have stuffed animals or toys for the kids, medications, paperwork, phone chargers etc.—into a suitcase or bag you’ll keep with you in the car.
Keep important documents safe
Pack important documents together, such as birth and marriage certificates, passports, Deeds, bonds etc. Once you arrive in your new home, make sure you unpack them before they get buried or sent to the loft. It is advised to keep them with you on the day and take them in the car.
Keep important documents safe
Have a good clear out of each room a month beforehand. If you have any items that can be recycled back in to the community give your local charity shop a call they would be more than happy to collect your unwanted items.
Try to keep similar room items together, for example books, CDs, Clothes, Kitchen utensils etc, this will make unpacking easier, remember if it fits in a box it goes in a box.

Label every box
It’s very important to label the box with the contents so you know where things are stored. If you don’t label you boxes carefully, you’ll end up opening them before you know where they should go.
Don’t overfill
Don’t overfill your boxes and make them heavy, this should reduce the risk of injury or breakage. Leaving space will allow you to add small item late if you need to keep things together.
Heavier Item
Pack heavier items individually and use smaller boxes to make lifting easier. If you pack with other items place the heavier ones at the bottom of the box and lighter items on top.

Fragile items
Pack your fragile items individually with plenty of wrapping and label the boxes accordingly. Make a cushion of crumpled paper in the bottom of the box,use packing paper, tissue or bubble wrap, and make sure the items can’t move around inside the box, once you have finished filling the box make another cushion of crumpled paper then seal the box. Don’t forget to label the box fragile. We don’t advise using newspaper the newsprint will rub off onto your belongings. If you have any silverware, we suggest using acid free tissue to prevent tarnishing.
Suitcases and Luggage
Most of us have suitcases in the loft don’t leave them empty use all the space you have and fill them up with clothes or even better use them for your essential items.

Paint and Liquids
This is the most important advice we can give you within regards to paint and liquids, anything flammable should not be packed in boxes and put onto the moving van, have a good look at all your paints and cleaning products you would be surprised at how many contains the flammable badge on the description.
Bathroom products should be wrapped individually and placed into a box standing up to minimise the affects of spillage. (Ziplock) bags are brilliant for liquids if you have any if not a bit of tape on the lid wrap it up and stand in the box.
Garden tools and equipment
This can be a tricky task to pack as you cant put a rake in a box, we suggest you banding the tools together covering any sharp objects to minimise the risk of an accident.
Ensure that any petrol driven equipment is cleaned and drained of fuel well before the move. If not then it cannot be taken on a moving van.

Storing the boxes
Use your garage or spare bedroom to as a pre staging area ready for the move, this will help keep the rest of the house clear of clutter while you pack the rest of your belongings.
Unpacking
Use the new garage or spare bedroom to store boxes before unpacking, this will avoid to much clutter and enable you to organise your furniture without tripping over boxes.
Electrical goods
Fridges and freezers emptied and if possible defrosted. Cookers need to be disconnected and reconnected at your new house. Secure washing machines with transit brackets to avoid damage in transit. Dishwashers should be empty and hoses drained.
Keep a kettle, T bags, Milk, Sugar and biscuits accessible for your moving day and plan on a takeout in the evening with a bottle of champers!
